Obituary

With deep regret we announce the death of Prof Zhaolun Fang on November 12, 2007 in Shenyang, China. Prof Fang was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, world-famed analytical scientist, and the Co-Chairperson of the Colloquium Spectroscopicum Interantionale XXXV. He could not attend the CSI XXXV due to his illness but had sent a congratulatory letter to the Colloquium from his hospital bed. Our most sincere sympathy goes to his family and close colleagues at the Northeast University and Zhejiang University.

Benli Huang, MCAS
Chair, CSI XXXV

GREETINGS FROM THE CO-CHAIRMAN OF CSI XXXV

Dear All Participants of Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale XXXV,

Welcome to the beautiful city of Xiamen. Being the first CSI Conference to be held in China, the Organizers of the Conference, (except myself) has devoted great efforts to make this Conference a most successful one, not only for intensive exchange of scientific knowledge and experimental experience in the spectroscopy world but also to let the participants fully enjoy the beautiful scenery of Xiamen in its best season.

Regretfully, after longing for this wonderful occasion for many years to meet many good old friends, my weak health prevents me from joining you in this great event.

The Organizers, particularly the Chairman, Professor Benli Huang, with the strong support of the International Scientific Advisory Board, the National Natural Science Foundations of China, Xiamen Municipal Government, Xiamen University, the local organizing committee, the Conference secretariat and other sponsors, have made great contributions to the successful organization of the Conference. It has been many Chinese spectroscopists’ dream for tens of years to host a CSI, now he has realized it comes true!

It is a great honor to act as Co-Chairman of such a prestigious Conference. Regretfully, my contribution to it can only be measured in the micro- if not nano-scale. However, it is sufficient for me to be connected with it.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Winner of the CSI XXXV Award, Professor Gary Hieftje for his outstanding contribution to spectroscopy, and to whole-heartedly wish all participants of the CSI XXXV a most enjoyable stay in Xiamen.

Zhaolun Fang, MCAS, FRSC
Co-Chairman of CSI XXXV
Professor, Zhejiang University
and Northeast University of China
